National beauty spot sold for $187,000
Thac Voi (Elephant Waterfall), a nationally-rated landscape, was sold at a dirty price, VND3 billion ($187,000).
An official of the Lam Dong province Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Le Van Quang, confirmed this information on May 13.

Located in a beautiful virgin forest in Nam Ban town, Lam Ha district, Lam Dong province, Thac Voi is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Central Highlands.

In 2002, some people in Nam Ban town established the Thac Voi Joint Stock Company, which had total capital of VND200 million ($12,500), and designed a project to manage, preserve and develop this landscape. The local government approved this project in 2005 but the project was not carried out at all.

Thac Voi Joint Stock Company only fenced off the waterfall and collected entrance fees and offered the project for sale in late 2007. HCM City-based Binh Phat Company recently bought the waterfall from Thac Voi Joint Stock Company at a cost of VND3 billion.

Early this year the media reported this case and at that time the Lam Dong province Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism suggested the local government withdraw the Thac Voi project from the Thac Voi Joint Stock Company, but this sale was not prevented.
